Professor Heike Schmitt – Environmental Microbiologist, Professor in Antibiotic Resistance in the
water environment at TU Delft, The Netherlands
She heads the Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment unit at RIVM and is a Senior Advisor on AMR WETSUS in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. She leads the environmental activities conducted within the National Action Plan on AMR for the Netherlands. She is an expert on the EFSA working group on the role of the environment in the emergence and spread of AMR through the food chain. She works on capacity building within the WHO CC on Risk Assessment of Pathogens in Food and Water. In partnership with LMICs, she has led (Tricycle) and is coordinating (JPI-TRIuMPH) international research consortia engaged in developing and implementing international environmental AMR surveillance protocols. She researches and publishes extensively on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) of pathogens of public health importance.
