Dr Patrick McDermott – Senior Advisor for Antimicrobial Resistance, Center for Veterinary Medicine

He has worked for over 25 years in the field of antimicrobial resistance. He has extensive experience in leading the development and implementation of AMR surveillance systems. He led the US national One Health AMR surveillance system for 14 years where he also initiated the most recent US efforts in environmental monitoring. He plays a vital role in the ongoing US efforts to get accurate AMU data in food producing and companion animals. He is one of the two principal FDA representatives on the Transatlantic Taskforce on Antimicrobial Resistance. He has worked extensively with WHO (GFN, AGISAR), PAHO, and the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation on national laboratory capacity building for food safety and harmonized AMR monitoring. His work requires engagement with a range of stakeholders at all levels. He has researched and published extensively on various aspects of AMR, including AMR in food systems, the emergence of resistance in treated animals, and methods development for detecting resistance.
